May Water Safety Focus – Boat Safety Skills

This month, our swimmers are learning essential boat safety skills to help them stay safer in, on, and around the water.

Through engaging and practical lessons, swimmers are building awareness and confidence by practising safe ways to enter the water from a boat, including:

🛟 Stride Entries
🛟 Backwards Roll Entries
🛟 Side Roll Entries

A big focus this month is understanding how to safely enter the water while wearing a lifejacket and protecting their head during entry.

Swimmers are learning our key prompt:

🟢 T – Arms out wide to form the letter “T”

🟢 Nose – Use one hand to hold your nose

🟢 Lifejacket – Use the other arm to hug across your body, while the arm holding your nose also secures the lifejacket

These practical safety skills help swimmers build real-life confidence and knowledge, empowering them to make safer decisions whenever they are around the water.

Winter is one of the best times to keep swimming.

Consistency is key when learning water safety and swimming skills. Swimmers who continue throughout winter often maintain confidence, build skills faster, and return to summer stronger and more capable in the water.

At Swimsation, our pools are heated and lessons continue all winter long in a fun, supportive environment focused on confidence, skill development, and real-life water safety.

🔥 Hot Winter Tips for Swimmers

• Wear a swim cap to help keep warm
• Consider a thermal rash top, thermal suit, or wetsuit for extra warmth
• Bring warm clothes that are easy to change into after lessons
• Pack two towels if possible
• Place a hot water bottle inside your towel bag for a warm towel after swimming
• Enjoy a warm Milo or hot drink after lessons
• Wear shoes, a jacket, and warm layers home
• Keep attending regularly to maintain progress and confidence

Swimming through winter keeps children active, resilient, and continuing to build essential life skills all year round.

Because water safety isn’t just for summer — it’s a skill for life.

Testimonials

Our children swim with Swimsation and have done since they were born, part of the reason we love their swimming programme so much is the water safety aspect they incorporate into the programme every term.

Nicole

My 7-year-old has been swimming at Swimsation Te Atatu since he was just 6 months old. He developed a huge love for water and still looks forward to his lesson every week. Now he’s thriving in his school’s advanced swimming group, plays Flippa Ball, and does Junior Lifeguards.

Stef

Just to say a HUGE thank you for our birthday party at Te Atatu Swimsation! Your excellent customer service made booking easy and your friendly, professional and highly experienced lifeguards made our party all the more special and enjoyable.
